Jordi Catalan Aguilà is Professor at the Centre for Advanced Studies of Blanes (CEAB), an institute of the Spanish Council for Scientific Research (CSIC). He is an ecologist and a limnologo, and an expert of the global change especially in relation to alpine lakes.

Jordi Catalan Aguilà, ecologist and limnologist, is professor at the Centre for Advanced Studies of Blanes (CEAB), an institute of the Spanish Council for Scientific Research (CSIC). He was assistant professor at the Department of Ecology of the University of Barcelona (1989-2001).

He uses empirical and theoretical approaches to study ecological dynamics and maintains wide collaboration with other biologists, geologists, chemists and physicists.

His research covers two main topics: Global Change Ecology, in which he primarily focuses remote freshwater ecosystems (e.g. alpine lakes) and their links with terrestrial ecosystems, addressing questions on ecological patterns and process related to present and past climate changes and long-range transport pollution; and Evolutionary Ecology, focussing on the analysis of the ecological restrictions to the evolution of life from a tropho-kinetic perspective, investigating how fundamental restrictions in physical encounters, energetic demands and biochemical composition of the organisms conditioned the evolution of forms and behaviours in organisms and their distribution patterns.

He has participated in several EU projects on environmental sciences, the most recent ones being Euro-limpacs and Emerge, in both addressing questions on Global Change in high mountain lakes.
